A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers have experienced an issue with the battery not charging past 1%.

Let’s call this MacBook A. It has a 512 GB SSUBX Apple Samsung OEM SSD (Model MZ-JPV5120/0A4). Let’s call this SSD A. After the update the MacBook doesn’t boot up properly anymore: Apple logo and progress bar appears, everything looks normal at first, but at 50% the progress bars stalls. The ‌M1‌ MacBook Pro can only connect to one external 6K display at 60Hz, including Apple's Pro Display XDR.By comparison, the Intel-based entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro that it replaces only.

If your 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro exhibits these behaviors, contact Apple to get your battery replaced, free of charge. Your computer will be examined prior to service to verify that it is eligible for the free battery replacement.

Apple has also released a macOS update that prevents this issue from happening to other 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers. Please update to macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 or later or install the macOS Catalina 10.15.7 supplemental update.

  • In macOS Big Sur, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Battery, select Battery in the sidebar, then click Battery Health.
  • In macOS Catalina or earlier, hold the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to reveal the battery status menu.

Update macOS

Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates. Look for macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 or later or macOS Catalina 10.15.7 supplemental update.

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of 13-inch MacBook Pro displays may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors:

  • Display backlight continuously or intermittently shows vertical bright areas along the entire bottom of the screen
  • Display backlight stops working completely

Apple Macbook Pro Software Update

Affected devices were sold between October 2016 and February 2018. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will service affected MacBook Pro units, free of charge.

To identify your computer's model and to see if it is eligible for this program, choose Apple () menu > About This Mac. Eligible models are listed below.

  • MacBook Pro (13-­inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-­inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

Note: No other Mac notebook models are part of this program.

Please choose one of the options below for service. Your MacBook Pro will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program.

  • Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
  • Make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store.
  • Contact Apple Support to arrange mail-in service via the Apple Repair Center.

To prepare your unit for service, please backup your data.

Note: If your MacBook Pro has any damage which impairs the service, that issue will need to be repaired first. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.

This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of your MacBook Pro.

If you believe your MacBook Pro was affected by this issue, and you paid to have your display repaired, you can contact Apple about a refund.

The program covers eligible MacBook Pro models for 5 years after the first retail sale of the unit or 3 years from the start date of this program, whichever is longer.
